The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has officially designated Monday, January 29, 2024, as the starting date for the 2024 tax season, marking the period when the agency will begin accepting and processing 2023 tax returns. You can find our estimated tax refund calendar schedule here to see when you can expect to receive your tax refund.
Despite the formal start date being at the end of January, taxpayers using software companies or tax professionals can begin preparations earlier. The IRS has confirmed that most software platforms will accept electronic submissions before the official start, holding them until processing commences.
Additionally, the IRS Free File service will be accessible from January 12, offering a free tax preparation option on the IRS website.
New IRS Tools To Make Tax Season Easier
The IRS is rolling out some changes to make things smoother for everyone. IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel says they’re really stepping up their game to improve how they operate. This means we can expect a better experience when dealing with the IRS this year.
A few things to look out for:
- More face-to-face help with Taxpayer Assistance Centers opening up more and staying open longer.
- Shorter wait times on the IRS helpline, thanks to an expanded call back feature.
- A beefed-up “Where’s My Refund?” tool. It’ll give you clearer, more detailed info on your refund status, so you won’t have to call the IRS as much.
And don’t miss out on the new Direct File pilot. It’s a free online service for filing your taxes directly with the IRS. You can read our full IRS Direct File review here, as well as our thoughts on who qualifies.
Tips For A Smooth Tax Return
The IRS is encouraging early preparation for the tax season. Gathering essential documents such as Social Security numbers, Taxpayer Identification Numbers, and Identity Protection PINs is advised to ensure accurate and timely filing.
The IRS particularly emphasizes the importance of reporting all taxable income and waiting for all income documents before filing.
Electronic filing, coupled with direct deposit, remains the recommended method for speed and efficiency. The IRS Free File service, aimed at families with an Adjusted Gross Income of $79,000 or less, is a critical component of this approach. In addition, Free File Fillable Forms will be available to taxpayers of all income levels starting January 29.
